Procurement

The scale and environmental impact of the procurement of healthcare goods and services can easily be underestimated. HFS published a report in 2009 establishing the carbon footprint of NHSScotland (based on data from 2004). It showed that carbon dioxide emissions from NHSScotland's procurement activities were more than the combined CO2 emissions from its buildings and travel by staff and patients. This is one of a number of reasons why sustainable procurement should be such a high priority.

NSS National Procurement is a Centre of Excellence for procurement, with key responsibilities and opportunities under Scotland's Sustainable Procurement Action Plan. For further information please visit their website, or contact us.

Information can also be found within the Sustainable Development Strategy 2012, and via the GCCAM website.
