Decontamination of healthcare equipment and instruments is a complex but vital service with very real sustainability implications. Staff and patient safety is paramount and it is also essential that the best use is made from NHSScotland's equipment and instruments, as these can be made from expensive or increasingly scare resources which may be sourced through complex supply chains with considerable transport distances involved.
In seeking to minimise waste and improve resource efficiency, HFS is looking at opportunities to capture and recycle the valuable metals in single-use instruments. It is developing associated guidance for staff, and the necessary procedures and contract arrangements with those who handle our waste.
